Ralph Albrecht practices in all areas of international intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks, trade secrets and copyrights.  Ralph has extensive experience in drafting, procuring, licensing and litigating patents related to information technology, computer software, hardware, communications, medical devices, databases, video games, computer games, search engines,  business methods, homeland security, Internet, electrical, electronics, bioinformatics, media, television, publishing, entertainment, theme park rides, household appliance, and consumer products related inventions.

Ralph co-leads the Patent Prosecution Practice Group at Venable, an Am-Law 100,  Washington, DC region lawfirm. Ralph joined Venable as a result of a merger in 2000 of his lawfirm Lane, Aitken & McCann, L.L.P., which he joined in 1999. Ralph worked for IBM Corporation from 1989 through 1997, first as an electrical engineer in research and development, and later as a technical marketing representative, he previously worked for IBM  from 1985 through 1989 in various defense related avionic and submarine system research and development laboratories and in marketing support. Mr. Albrecht was previously with Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox, an intellectual property boutique law firm in the Washington, DC area where he counseled high technology clients on patent related issues.

Ralph's clients include small and medium-sized startup high technology clients, as well as large international corporations in the entertainment, media, information technology, and financial services industry.  He specializes in patent procurement, commercialization and enforcement, particularly in computer software and hardware, video game, business method, Internet, consumer products, and communications technologies.  Representative clients include Viacom, Lockheed Martin, Firaxis Games, Euro-pro, KOM Networks, Leading Edge Design Systems, Columbia Technologies, LLC, Safety Through Cellular, Starrgate, OnVon Networks, and Compudyne.

Mr. Albrecht received his Juris Doctor from George Mason University School of Law in 1997 in the Intellectual Property Track. Mr. Albrecht graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in electrical engineering (cum laude) in 1989 where he was a member of the cooperative education program, honors program, Eta Kappa Nu, Omicron Delta Kappa and Kappa Theta Epsilon honoraries.

Mr. Albrecht was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar in 1997. Mr. Albrecht is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Albrecht was admitted to the bar of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in 1999.

He is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the American Bar Association, the Capital Telecommunications Professionals (CTP), and the Bar Association of the District of Columbia (BADC), where he was the 2003-2004 Chair of the Patent, Trademark and Copyright (PTC) Section, is a delegate to the Board of Directors for 2004, as immediate past chair of the PTC Section, and was previously a delegate to the Board of Directors in 2003 as Chair-Elect of the PTC Section 2002-2003, PTC Section Executive Council Member 2002-2005, and was Chair of the Internet and E-Commerce Committee from 2000-2002. Ralph has received two distinguished achievement awards from the BADC PTC Section when previously serving as Secretary of the PTC Section in 2002, and as Chair of the Newsletter Committee in 2000.  Ralph was previously an IP legal services provider with a technology incubator.

Ralph Albrecht has written various articles on protecting intellectual property as well as serving as Editor of the BADC PTC Section Newsletter.
